Why I Don’t Believe In Taking Individual Vitamins
I would like to tell you a short story but I don’t want you to judge me for it, God knows we all make mistakes and I for one have made PLENTY of them.
Some of you may know me from BHI which I founded very early on in my hair journey way back before hair vitamins featured in my world. Sometime later, however, vitamins appeared on my horizon and of course, I was eager to try and see if I could enhance my hair growth efforts.
Absorbing all the information I could about various vitamins and minerals, my eventual decision was to start a course of individual vitamins. I chose the ones that I thought showed the most benefit specifically for hair growth.
The ones I chose (based on my limited research at the time) were Biotin, Silica, Niacin and MSM.
You should have seen my smug self-satisfied smile as I started taking my daily supplements. How clever I felt at having re-created a ‘better and more potent’ version of [insert popular hair vitamin here]. And so much cheaper too!
Little did I know what was in store for me….
I won't bore you with the details of what happened next but needless to say it didn’t end well with my body literally rejecting them and leaving me with a number of unpleasant symptoms including but not limited to involuntary muscle twitches, angry red rashes on my upper arms and breakouts (even though I never get breakouts!). Unsurprisingly, these symptoms only stopped when I stopped taking the vitamins and the worst part is that I had absolutely nothing to show for my trouble. Sigh.
Even though I see this popular trend nowadays with information on hair blogs and forums recommending random vitamins or mega-high doses of individual vitamins, especially Biotin. At best when your body is unable to absorb these vitamins they will be expelled through your urine and at worse you could be left with a variety of symptoms including depression, insomnia or breakouts. See the thing is a great many of us don’t realize is our bodies don’t just absorb vitamins indiscriminately. I will explain….
Let’s take calcium for instance. We are all aware that calcium helps us build strong bones so it would follow that those with the highest calcium intake have the healthiest strongest bones right? Wrong! The United States actually has one of the highest rates of osteoporosis in the world, this is despite the fact that we have one of the highest intakes of calcium. Confused? Well, you shouldn’t be.
In actual fact, quite a few factors go into what makes bones strong not least of which is the presence of Vitamin D, Vitamin K. These two work in conjunction with the calcium that you ingest in a biological dance to help you to retain this calcium and strengthen your bones. With low levels of vitamin D and K, you simply cannot retain enough calcium even when you are taking high doses.
Of course, the process of calcium absorption is much more complex with other dietary and lifestyle factors playing a role as to how much calcium you absorb but I’m sure that you get the point that vitamins don’t work individually but in tangent with others.
Hair vitamins, of course, are no exception, think of them as a complement to your diet and of course ensure that you pick a supplement with a wide range of vitamins and minerals that ensure that when you absorb them your body is actually making use of the added nutrition and not just paying for very expensive pee!
Elongtress Hair Vitamins promote lustrous hair growth and is nutrient rich both in range of vitamins and strength to help with maximum absorption.*
