4 Ways To Fight Dry Hair During The Winter Months

The cold temperatures during the winter can be brutal. For your hair included. While I’m currently staring at temps fluctuating back and forth from the lower teens up to the mid-40s, I can’t help but feel for my hair. I can literally feel the moisture dwindling as the cold wind harshly blows against it.

As someone who is not currently rocking a protective style, I am required to change up my hair routine a bit during these colder months to ensure that I am retaining as much moisture as I possibly can and fighting dry hair.

Here are 4 particular methods I implement to fight dry hair during the winter months.

1. Enhance your deep conditioning

My deep conditioner is bae. Every time I wash my hair with shampoo a deep conditioning treatment must follow. While this is often times enough, I am always sure to “up my game” when it’s a bit colder and windy out to add a little extra oomph.

I do this by first adding the deep conditioner so that all my strands are saturated and then I added a heaping amount of a heavy oil such as Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) to coat my strands.

It is always necessary to cover your hair with a plastic cap as to incorporate heat which allows the cuticles of your strands to gently raise and allow the moisturizing components to penetrate and enter the hair shaft.

When rinsing, be sure to use cool water which will close your cuticles and seal in any moisture that is within it.

I find that this little addition does wonders for moisture retention and keeping my curls hydrated, shiny, and filled with luster.

2. Increase hot oil treatments

As I mentioned before, incorporating more oil into your regimen can make all the difference in the world during the cold months of winter. During a normal season, I would perform hot oil treatments only about once every two months. More commonly I will use oil at room temperature to serve as a pre-poo prior to clarifying my scalp and hair.

However, now that it’s colder out and my hair needs a little extra T.L.C., I’ve bumped up the hot oil treatments to about twice a month or every time I use shampoo.

The added heat assists by allowing the oil to gently penetrate your hair shaft instead of just coating it.

To achieve this, I simply bring water to a boil, take a bottle of my favorite oil (I usually use Creme of Nature Argan Oil Treatment) and set it in the water for a few minutes. Then I apply the oil to dry hair immediately prior to shampooing and let sit for about 30 minutes before continuing my wash day as usual.

Because the oil is heated there is no need to cover with a plastic cap. Just simply complete other tasks around your home to pass the time letting your hair be free and then shampoo.

I find that by increasing my hot oil treatments my hair remains shiny, moisturized and not stripped after shampooing.

3. Use cream-based styling products

Lastly, I find that using cream-based styling products during the winter months make a tremendous difference in the outcome of my styles and keeping my hair looking and feeling well moisturized.

These heavier products help to seal in the moisture so that your hair is protected When it is subject to the cold air.

Most naturals tend to retreat to wash n’ gos during the summer time using only gel and maybe a little oil. During the winter try doing more twist outs and use a heavier cream based product to assist in sealing in the moisture that the cold harsh air may try to steal.

4. Nourish from the inside out

We all know the common phrase, you are what you eat and that definitely goes for your hair too. Be sure to incorporate foods rich in vitamins and minerals into your diet as it is a sure way to keep your hair follicles happy and hair growth consistent.

Along with a good diet be sure to stay hydrated as it will help your hair as well! Target about eight glasses a day or at least half your body weight in ounces (if you weigh 120lbs you should be drinking about 60oz a day).

Even though it is hard to drink a ton of water during the Winter time we would encourage you to do so because the extra hydration will help to keep your hair moisturized as well.
