How To Protective Style Effectively And Retain Your Gained Length

While you are on your growth journey in addition to maintaining a healthy diet, supplementation and great hair care you might also choose to protective style.

Protective styles are styles that ‘protect’ your hair for an extended period of time from your own manipulation, the environment and normal wear and tear.

Protective styles also tend to cover up your real hair to the point where the ends and the length of the hair are not exposed. We often encourage protective styling because you can gain a ton of length and if you retain that length you will meet your growth goals.

How can you get the most benefit from your protective style?

1. No tension

If you opt for box braids or any sort of style that protect your hair in individual sections then you must be careful about how tight the style is done.

Be very careful with your sensitive areas like your edges, the nape area and the crown of your hair because you can cause hair loss which is counter-productive to what you are trying to achieve.

2. Washing your extensions prior to installation

If you are adding hair to your hair, remember that the hair you add must be clean prior to your install. Make sure that you wash and soak the hair in Apple Cider Vinegar and water so that you do not irritate your scalp.

3. Do not leave the style in for too long

8 weeks maximum should be the amount of time for any protective style. Weaves, braids, twists as long as your hair has been locked away you should allow your real hair to breath after 8 weeks or less. Before your next installation waits a few weeks to allow the hair to relax and get pampered.

4. Deep condition your hair after you take down the style

Even though you will be taking care of your real hair and scalp as best you can while protected when you take down your style you will have to remove shed hair and give your hair some much-needed TLC.

Remove the shed hair, get a trim if you need one and deep condition your hair with protein which will strengthen your strands for your next style.
